Information about this service

The Drug Intervention Programme is a national Home Office Programme which is commissioned in Cheshire by Cheshire Drug Action Team (DAT). Our role is to identify class A drug users who come in to contact with the Criminal Justice System either at arrest in Police custody suites, prior to sentence in Magistrates’ Courts or in Probation offices and following sentence in Prisons or Probation. We then assess the needs of the individual and engage them in a programme of work aimed at reducing their use of illegal drugs with the overall aim being recovery from dependence on substances.

We cover two custody suites in Cheshire, Middlewich and Blacon in Chester and we have workers based in Chester, Northwich, Crewe and Macclesfield. We accept referrals from any agency working with a Class A drug user where there is contact with the Criminal Justice System and we also accept self referrals.

What happens when we meet?

You will be given a warm welcome and meet with your worker who will carry out an assessment with you. Together you will decide on an action plan that best suit your needs. This plan will be drawn from some of the services below.

Services Offered

One to one support

We know that one size does not fit all, we treat everyone who comes to us as an individual, tailoring each treatment programme to particular needs. Working with a dedicated worker an individual care plan will be put together.

Work with people on release from prison

We are all too aware that clients can be at their most vulnerable when they are released form prison. We will work with them and the prison services to ensure the continuity of treatment on release, including prescriptions and appointments to support clients after their release.

Police Court and Prisons

We will provide support to people who find themselves in custody and write the appropriate Court reports when necessary. We will also liaise with Probation and Courts to advise them of motivation to change and engagement with our service to help inform their assessment and decide on the most appropriate sentence for the client.

Referral to support services

We work very closely with our colleagues from various services throughout Cheshire including Structured Daycare, Health and Prescribing, Housing and Education, Training and Employment. We will ensure that we respond to the clients needs by referring them to the appropriate services and then work collaboratively with those services to ensure positive outcomes.

Assertive Outreach Appointments

We understand that as well as appointments with our team our clients may have any number of things going on in their lives such as childcare, illness or lack of access to transport. If for any reason clients are unable to attend appointments at our offices we will endeavour to come and meet clients at their home address or any other mutually agreed location.

Detoxification & Rehabilitation

We work closely with our colleagues from the drug services and identify clients that may benefit from detoxification and rehabilitation and can help the client through the assessment process and with visiting potential detoxification and rehabilitation units.
